About the Village
Tenganan Pegringsingan is one of Bali’s oldest Bali Aga (indigenous Balinese) villages, located in Karangasem Regency. For centuries, the community has preserved its ancestral traditions, customary laws, and unique way of life, making Tenganan a living example of Bali’s rich cultural heritage.
The village is known for its strong customary governance, where land, forests, water resources, and community life are managed through traditional regulations that have been passed down for generations. Tenganan remains largely self-sufficient, with its agricultural landscape and natural resources continuing to support the community’s daily life.
Tenganan is internationally renowned for Gringsing, one of the world’s rarest textiles woven using the double ikattechnique—a tradition found only in Bali, India, and Japan. Visitors can also experience the village’s distinctive architecture, communal leadership system, unique Bali Mula calendar, and enduring customs that continue to shape everyday life.

Tourism in Tenganan Pegringsingan is organized by the Tenganan Pegringsingan Traditional Village and managed by Danendra Cooperative, a community-owned cooperative established to ensure that tourism directly benefits local residents while preserving the village’s cultural heritage, traditional values, and customary way of life.
Why they formed the group
The group was established to develop community-based ecotourism that empowers local communities while preserving Tenganan’s unique cultural heritage. Through collaboration with the Wisnu Foundation, Tenganan became one of the founding villages of the Village Ecotourism Network (JED). To strengthen community participation, Danendra Cooperative was established to manage tourism activities and ensure that the benefits are shared fairly among the local community.
