Bali has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year (around 26–32°C). There are two main seasons:
In some of our partner villages located in the highlands, such as Pelaga and Dukuh Sibetan, temperatures can be cooler, especially in the morning and evening.
Our member villages are located across different regions of Bali. The closest village is Nyambu, in Tabanan Regency, approximately 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport (depending on traffic). The furthest village is Perancak, in Jembrana Regency, which takes approximately 2–3 hours by car. Most of our villages are around 1.5–2 hours from the airport.
Travel time may vary depending on traffic conditions and the location of your accommodation before or after the program. We are happy to assist in arranging transportation if needed.
We recommend wearing clothing that is both comfortable and respectful of local customs.
Many of our programs involve visiting family homes, community spaces, temples, farms, or natural areas. Dressing modestly helps show respect to your hosts and the local culture. In general, clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is appropriate, especially when visiting temples or participating in cultural activities.
The most suitable clothing will also depend on the activities and environment you will be visiting:
Above all, we encourage guests to dress comfortably so they can fully enjoy the experience.
Before your visit, the JED team will provide detailed information about the activities in your itinerary and recommendations on what to wear and bring, so you can come prepared and make the most of your time in the village.
We recommend:
Light, breathable clothing
If your program includes trekking or farming activities, bring comfortable outdoor wear.
If you are staying overnight, you may also want to bring a small daypack and any personal medication.
You are welcome to bring a small gift for your host family or children in the village, but this is completely optional and not expected. If you would like guidance on appropriate gift s, feel free to ask us beforehand.
Yes, we recommend bringing insect repellent, especially for afternoon and evening activities. Villages are surrounded by rice fields, forests, and gardens, which are part of the beautiful rural landscape.
Yes, most of our programs are child-friendly and suitable for families.
However, some activities — such as trekking or farming activities — may be physically demanding for toddlers. Village life in Bali follows a natural rhythm.
At night, you may occasionally hear dogs barking. In Balinese culture, dogs are often considered guardians of the home, so their presence is part of everyday life in the village. Early in the morning, roosters may crow as the village begins its daily activities.
While it may feel different from staying in a hotel, many guests find these sounds to be a unique and authentic part of the rural experience — a reminder that you are truly living within a local community. If you are a light sleeper, we recommend bringing earplugs for extra comfort.
Bali is a tropical island, and village homes are surrounded by gardens, rice fields, and nature. Because of this, it is possible to encounter small insects such as ants or mosquitoes.
We recommend bringing insect repellent for your comfort. In some accommodations, traditional natural methods are also used to help keep insects away.
You may occasionally see a gecko. Geckos are common in Balinese homes and are harmless. They help control insects and are generally shy, keeping their distance from people.
Our village hosts maintain clean and comfortable rooms, but part of staying in a rural setting means sharing space with nature.
